Yeah yeah yeah I know this is maybe old news, but in case you missed it a few years ago here is Marcel the Shell:

It’s co- lady- and manmade by Jenny Slate and her fiance Dean Fleischer-Camp. Isn’t that cuuuuuute!?

Jenny Slate has done other stuff too but this is the best. She got in trouble for “accidentally” saying the f word on SNL and only lasted a year. She was also on a lot of those fluffy VH1 shows that you may or may not have broken gym treadmill time limit rules to watch for hours while walking sloooowly.

I first found Tavi’s blog when people were hatin on her for being young and little and internet-famous and wearing too crazy of a hat at some runway show. Who was this creature? Primed to hate, I actually was really impressed by her really thoughtful writing, her beautiful photography, and her inspiring little sets of cool images.

She started her blog at 11, and now at 15, has founded an awesome online magazine, Rookie Mag, for teenage girls who crave something with a progressive, alt, feminist, weirdo nerd twist. What I really love is that many of the articles are written by teenage girls or by cool adult heroes. Tavi’s interviews (like this one with David Sedaris) are really fresh, smart and fun – she’s one of my favorite interviewers! It makes me really wish I had had something like that at 15. There weren’t as many options then when the internet was young. T____T

I like that the fashion photographers are young and get to do what they want:

This mag doesn’t shy away from much – queerness, drugs, sexual assault along with fun movies(!), fun music(!), fun comics(!) – but addresses everything in an open, very helpful way. It’s not like those scared straight horror stories you read in Seventeen about being out of control / victimized. I wish I had a little niece or someone else to recommend this to!

So maybe the ladies of The Like seem a tiny bit entitled (all three young L.A. members have music industry dads) and obnoxious in their too-cute retroliciousness, but they’re also talented and fun and oh-so-summery. I definitely don’t condone facebook lurkin around out of sheer Sunday night boredom, but sometimes this does lead to good things! Like my elementary school friend’s boyfriend’s brother’s (also a high school classmate) girlfriend’s site Across from Me. Sometimes the simplest ideas can have powerful results, yeah? And it’s nice antidote to my general tumblr hate – I love that this tumblr has a very clear focus: “A series of photos I secretly take while sitting across from people every day on the NYC subway.” THANK YOU. The people-watching was the only thing I liked about the D.C. metro, but it’s gotten so bad, even the people-watching can’t convince me to ride. Here’s the people-watching without the long waits, the heat, the smells, the creepers, etc. Yay!
